Building a Strong King Township: Advocating for Balanced Growth

Why Balanced Growth Matters

King Township is one of Ontario's most unique communities. It is home to thriving farms, innovative businesses, growing villages, natural heritage, and an entrepreneurial spirit that continues to attract investment. As our community plans for the future through the Official Plan Review to 2051, the decisions made today will shape the Township for generations.

The King Chamber of Commerce believes that economic prosperity and environmental stewardship are not competing priorities—they are complementary objectives that must be pursued together.

A successful Official Plan should support responsible growth while ensuring King remains a place where businesses can invest, residents can afford to live, employees can work close to home, and agriculture continues to thrive.

Supporting Local Businesses Requires More Than Commercial Land

Business growth depends on much more than available commercial space. Companies also require reliable infrastructure, transportation networks, access to utilities, and a skilled workforce.

Employers across King continue to identify labour shortages as one of their greatest challenges. At the same time, many employees cannot afford to live in the communities where they work. Thoughtfully planned housing, including attainable housing options and mixed-use developments located within existing settlement areas, can help address workforce challenges while strengthening local businesses.

When businesses have access to talent, and employees have access to housing, the entire community benefits.

Infrastructure Must Keep Pace With Growth

Growth cannot occur without adequate infrastructure.

Road capacity, water and wastewater servicing, electrical capacity, broadband connectivity, and transportation planning must be aligned with future development. Businesses require certainty that essential infrastructure will be available to support expansion and investment.

Strategic infrastructure investment is not simply a municipal issue, it is an economic development priority. Investment from all levels of government is a necessity.

Agriculture Remains One of King's Greatest Economic Assets

Agriculture is more than part of King's history, t is a vital component of its future economy.

The Chamber continues to support planning policies that protect prime agricultural land while recognizing farming as an evolving business sector. Modern agriculture relies on innovation, technology, processing, logistics, agri-tourism, and value-added production. These businesses require supportive planning policies and infrastructure that enable them to remain competitive.

Protecting farmland is not anti-growth, it is smart growth.

Agriculture Is More Than Our Heritage, it’s part of our Future

Agriculture has always been at the heart of King Township's identity, but it is also a cornerstone of our local economy. From family-run farms and equestrian operations to greenhouse producers and agri-food businesses, agriculture supports jobs, drives investment, and contributes to the economic resilience of our community.

Protecting prime agricultural land remains essential, but preserving farmland alone is not enough. We must also ensure that farming itself remains a viable and sustainable business for future generations.

One of the most pressing challenges facing our agricultural community is farm succession planning. Many farming operations are family-owned, and a significant number of farm owners are approaching retirement age. Without a clear succession plan, we risk losing not only family businesses but also valuable agricultural knowledge, local food production, and the economic contributions these operations make to our community.

Supporting succession means creating an environment where the next generation of farmers has the confidence and opportunity to continue the family business. This includes improving access to capital, encouraging young and new farmers, reducing unnecessary regulatory barriers, and ensuring planning policies provide the flexibility needed for modern agricultural operations to evolve and remain competitive.

Agriculture today extends far beyond primary production. Innovation in agri-tech, automation, value-added processing, agritourism, environmental stewardship, and local food production are creating new opportunities for growth. King Township is well positioned to become a leader in modern agriculture, provided our planning framework supports innovation while protecting the agricultural land base.

The Chamber believes that supporting agriculture means supporting the businesses, families, and entrepreneurs who make farming possible. By encouraging long-term investment, facilitating successful farm succession, and embracing innovation, we can help ensure that agriculture remains a thriving part of King's economy for generations to come.

Planning for a Complete Community

A successful municipality balances residential growth with employment opportunities, environmental protection, recreation, agriculture, and commercial investment.

The Official Plan presents an opportunity to create communities where residents can live, work, shop, and access services locally, reducing commuting pressures while strengthening local economic activity.

Balanced planning also creates resilience. Communities with diverse housing, strong businesses, vibrant agriculture, and modern infrastructure are better positioned to adapt to changing economic conditions.

The Chamber's Commitment

The King Chamber of Commerce remains committed to representing the interests of our business community throughout the Official Plan Review process.

Our role is not simply to react to planning proposals but to contribute thoughtful, evidence-based recommendations that support long-term economic prosperity while preserving the qualities that make King Township unique.

Strong communities are built through collaboration. We encourage businesses, residents, and community organizations to stay informed, participate in public consultations, and share their perspectives as King plans for the future.

Together, we can help ensure that growth strengthens our economy, supports our businesses, protects our agricultural heritage, and enhances the quality of life for future generations.
